Rachel Hopkins MP letter to new PM Liz Truss on cost of living crisis

I wrote to the new Prime Minister Liz Truss urging her to act on the Cost of Living Crisis:

Following your appointment as the Prime Minister, I am writing to you about the urgent cost of living crisis that is damaging the living standards of my constituents in Luton South and people across the country.

The results of my Luton South Summer Survey show that an overwhelming number of my constituents are worried about the cost of their bills, with a majority saying they are worse off than last year and very worried about how they will pay in the future.

The cost of living crisis is devastating living standards across the UK: inflation is soaring, bills are skyrocketing, and wages are stagnant. Rising household costs are increasing personal debt and forcing people into vulnerable financial situations. The public expects swift intervention from your Government to tackle spiralling costs.

The Conservative Government’s inaction on this crisis is shameful. I hope now that you are in post you will follow the Labour Party’s lead by guaranteeing that households will not have to pay a penny more on energy bills this winter. Without a bold commitment, households will be forced to choose between heating or eating.

On election as Conservative Party Leader, you stated, “I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills, but also dealing with the long term issues we have on energy supply.” The economic challenges facing communities across the country must be your primary short-term concerns.

Your Conservative Government must make tackling these issues its urgent priority. The people of Luton South deserve a government on their side, dedicated to putting their interests first.
