Welcome to my August newsletter. With Parliament in Summer Recess, it’s been great to visit businesses and community organisations across Luton South.
The town is also looking forward to welcoming Premier League fans to Luton South for Luton Town’s home game against West Ham next Friday!
Read some of my August highlights below.
Opposing the closure of Luton Station Ticket Office
The deadline to respond to the public consultation into the proposed closure of over 1000 station ticket offices – including at Luton Station – has been extended to 1 September.
It is important that as many local voices are heard as possible. You can find out how to respond to the consultation and a suggested draft response here.
You can also sign my petition calling on the Secretary of State for Transport to save Luton Station’s ticket office below.
Visiting Easyjet
It was great to visit EasyJet’s Head Office at London Luton Airport. During my visit, I met with some of their apprentices to learn more about their apprenticeships schemes, the team also told me about how their school outreach is promoting varied careers in aviation, from engineering and IT to leadership and management.
Head of Maintenance Adrian also gave me a tour of the Engineering Hanger and showed me how they maintain their planes.
Learning More About Local Manufacturing Businesses
We have lots of interesting and varied manufacturing businesses in Luton South. I was delighted to recently meet Paul and the team at DRN Engineering, based in Laporte Way, to learn about the skilled engineering jobs involved in manufacturing precision turned and milled parts.
It was fascinating to hear more about the wide range of uses for parts they produce, from classic cars and submarines to fire suppression tools and medical equipment.
Visiting Summer Holiday Schemes in Luton South
I was delighted to visit Active Luton’s ‘Energise Luton holiday camp’ at Inspire Sports Village. I also met Shana and the team from Community Interest Luton, and their excellent volunteers at their ‘Young Steps’ summer camp at Queen Elizabeth School.
Lovely to see the young people enjoying taking part in physical activities, enriching activities including arts and crafts, and receiving a healthy meal.
